What are the critical steps to process optimization?

By far, the most exciting step in process optimization is the “what if” scenario modeling.  Everyone likes to jump to this step.  Unfortunately, less time needs to be spend on “what if” scenarios while more time needs to be spend to validate the model.  By validating your model, I am referring to confirming not only that the inputs and outputs are relating, but also confirming the transfer function (the relationship between inputs and outputs).  One needs to look at the applicability of the transfer function over a broad operating range of each relevant parameter.

The next most critical step in process optimization is to document the optimum process and establish appropriate limits on all input parameters.  This step is referred as the “Control” phase in Six Sigma.
