A good first inspiration source in process optimization is to look for best practices in your industry.  Knowing average yield of a process can help identify goals and define a financial stake for process optimization.

Asking a new employee to look for process optimization opportunities or lead a process optimization team is an excellent way to improve the process.  A new employee will be more accepting of alternatives opposite an employee working in the same area or process for 25 years.  A new employee with a broad background can further expand alternate thinking to redefine the process and come up with a new optimum.
